Former Dairy Slated for Demolition - Upper Sandusky, OH
We just love these old buildings. This building served the area as a dairy for nearly 100 years. Unfortunately, the owner is going to knock it down. We've been in a lot of old buildings but this one was pretty unique. The entire basement of the building served as a refrigerator with a tunnel connecting it to the adjacent building. We found evidence of an old laboratory upstairs too.
As is common with these old buildings, there was asbestos in several of the building components including floor tile, pipe insulation, window glazing and roofing tar. The abatement crew knocked this out of the park, finishing a week early. No smooth-running project goes without surprises though. While we were on site, the city water coming into the building erupted and flooded the basement! The city water department was there surprisingly fast and took care of the issue for us. WEFM provided oversight and air sampling throughout the project and, in this case, damage control. It's a shame to see these old buildings go but progress never stops!
