Mold Remediation Abandoned Basement - Lansing, MI
This basement was beneath an active store and the occupants were complaining of respiratory problems. WEFM first laid eyes on this abandoned basement in March of 2021. From what we could tell, the basement was previously occupied by a few small businesses and a drug store and appears to have been abandoned in the early 1990's. That means mold moved in following a few floods and had approximately 30 years to live its best life. Mold had completely overrun every square inch of this 10,000 square foot basement. Knowing that it was a drug store/pharmacy, this project had some unusual considerations during remediation. All of the patient records, dating back into the 1970's, needed to be disposed of separately under HIPAA regulations. There were also stock piles of unmarked liquids, assumed to be flammable. In yet another corner we found several trash bags filled with used needles and syringes. All of this was complicated by the fact that the only access was up and down a winding, steel staircase. WEFM, always thinking outside of the box, assembled an electric hoist system, brought the basement under negative pressure and we were underway.
Anything that could be removed was bagged and hoisted out. HIPAA records, assumed flammables and biohazard sharps were all placed in a separate, locked container for appropriate disposal. Wood, drywall, ceiling tile and any remaining contents were all bagged and placed in dumpsters. Wood deemed "structural" was treated with an antimicrobial and encapsulated. All walls, floors and ceilings were then treated with an antimicrobial and the ENTIRE basement was fogged with yet another antimicrobial. It may have taken 18 months to start the project, but in 7 days we removed an estimated 40,000 pounds (20 TONS) of material and returned the space to the tenants as clean, safe storage.
No job is too big or small!
